With Greek cultural roots from Cyprus, Briar has long held a deep passion for Greek folk music from across Greece and Cyprus, particularly the rich and intricate vocal traditions of the style. She began singing Greek repertoire around 2015 with two fellow musicians, forming the band Hypnos, which performed extensively both locally and nationally.

From 2018, Briar lived in Greece for four years, during which time she became fluent in the Greek language and immersed herself deeply in the country’s musical culture. This period greatly expanded her repertoire and refined her vocal technique, particularly in the execution of the highly ornamented melisma characteristic of Greek singing.

After returning to New Zealand, Briar began incorporating her Greek vocal expertise more prominently into her work with Balkan ensemble Bazurka, while also performing exclusively Greek music at events around Wellington, including the Greek Food Festival. She is recognised for her technical skill and expressive control in delivering the demanding vocal melisma central to Greek music.
