Programme Note

This monumental musical event features four powerful new compositions by Briar Prastiti for massed choirs—uniting more than 300 singers—alongside electronic soundscapes, live solo vocals, and Taonga Pūoro. Inspired by the essence of Wellington City Library and the natural elements reflected in its design, the works unfold as both blessing and ritual, marking the long-awaited reopening of the library after its years of reconstruction. Performed within the library itself and projected into the surrounding streets, the music transforms the building into a living instrument, inviting the city to gather, listen, and share in this collective moment of renewal.

Briar’s compositions follow a clear progression, beginning with Dawn Ceremony, which opens and blesses the space, followed by three episodes: Flow, Light, and Earth. Each work explores the tension between ambiguity and structure. Musically, they emerge from vibrant, freeform aleatoric textures—voices moving independently in layered crescendo—and gradually resolve into unified, harmonic choral writing. This journey from ambiguity to cohesion mirrors the community’s long anticipation during the library’s closure, culminating in the return of the building itself—once again open, structured, and welcoming.

Dawn Ceremony serves as an introductory blessing. Briar’s powerful solo voice intertwines with the sacred, resonant tones of Taonga Pūoro performed by Alistair Fraser. Their duet is held within an atmospheric, womb-like soundscape shaped by the choirs and electronic accompaniment, before expanding into a full-scale choral affirmation. This opening work welcomes the community into the space and signifies the birth of a new era for Pōneke, Wellington.

The first episode, Flow, draws on the elemental forces of river and wind. It reflects the constant movement of people through the library and the ever-evolving current of life and knowledge it sustains. Briar’s electronic textures incorporate subtle sounds of water and air, reinforcing this sense of motion and continuity.

The second episode, Light, evokes illumination as both natural element and metaphor. It celebrates the energy the library generates—learning, connection, openness, and growth. Shimmering, spacious sonic textures support soaring vocal lines, creating a sense of uplift and possibility.

The final episode, Earth, grounds the work in strength and solidity. It represents the library as foundation and heart—a place of belonging, safety, and shared identity. Incorporating lyrics in Te Reo Māori and rhythms inspired by the human heartbeat, the music settles into a resonant, unified statement. In doing so, it honours the library as a steadfast presence for generations to come.
